Microsoft .NET in a Nutshell
Microsoft developed the .NET software framework as a common platform for the development and deployment of applications on (primarily) Windows devices. The Framework Class Library (FCL) allows programmers to create applications without having to develop low level functionality each time, and the Common Language Runtime (CLR) allows those applications to be deployed to different devices that have different underlying hardware architectures—providing they support installation of the .NET Framework itself. Most .NET software development is undertaken using Microsoft’s Visual Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that allows fully interoperable .NET applications and application components to be created using a variety of programing languages including Visual Basic and C#.
What can it do for me?
The .NET Framework can cut development costs by reducing the need for developers to “reinvent the wheel” for each new application. The framework itself provides lower level functionality, while third party .NET class libraries provide reusable functionality at the higher level. Applications developed by assembling off-the-shelf .NET components can also benefit from being more consistent and more reliable, because the providers of those components can concentrate on making them “best of breed” in their various niches. Theoretically at least, the .NET Framework also reduces the need to “port” applications between different hardware devices.
