Xamarin in a Nutshell
Xamarin is a .NET compatible software framework (and the name of the company that controls it) created by the developers of the forerunner Mono framework that extended Microsoft’s .NET Framework beyond the confines of Windows and out to Linux platforms and Android mobile devices. While Xamarin offers its own “Xamarin Studio” Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for mobile app development, it also provides add-ins that allow Microsoft’s Visual Studio IDE to be used for cross-platform development of applications using the C# programming language and targeted at iOS (e.g. iPhone) and Android devices in addition to Windows devices.
What can it do for me?
Historically, the porting of applications between different devices running different operating systems has been a pain. With a plethora of mobile devices as well as traditional desktop platforms, it still is. But Xamarin eases that pain of porting by allowing our software developers to build (using Xamarin Platform), test (using Xamarin Test Cloud) and monitor (using Xamarin Insights) one-size-fits-all applications that are – as far as possible – device agnostic. With between 75% and 100% common code, apps can be offered to the widest possible audience at the lowest possible cost.
