HTML5 in a Nutshell
HTML5 is the latest iteration of the industry-standard Hypertext Markup Language that defines the displaying of internet content (web pages) in web browsers. The HTML5 standard is intended to standardize the proprietary features that have crept into various web browsers over the years, and to provide support for video, audio and other media content without the need for separate bowser plug-ins. Other HTML5 elements are designed to enrich the semantic (meaning rather than mere presentation) content of documents. In the brave new world cloud computing, where an always-on internet connection is assumed, HTML5 nonetheless allows for the creation of web applications that provide a degree of offline (disconnected) functionality as well as online functionality thanks to local caching of data.
What can it do for me?
One of the big benefits of HTML5 is the potential to reduce reliance on the resource-hungry and somewhat shunned (at least by Apple) Adobe Flash plug-in for playing video content in web browsers. Taking this further, HMTL5 also has big potential as an enabler for cross-platform location-aware mobile applications that run on HTML5-compatible smartphones and tablets as well as desktop PCs. The new HTML5 canvas element allows for very dynamic and interactive content including games that can run within the web browser.
